喫煙する人にとって、風当たりの強い時代ですが、私は未だに吸い続けております。
銘柄は、JPS。もちろんノートンとロータスをサポートしていたからという理由で選んでいる訳ですが、そんなJPSユーザーにちょっと驚きの新製品が、その名は、JPSメンソール。JPSのメンソールって…しかも北海道と沖縄の限定。またひとついい北海道土産ができました。
私が上京した頃（バリーシーンのヤマハにJPSがサポートしていた頃）には、東京でも銀座のタバコセンター等でしか入手できない高級なタバコでした。セブンスターが180円、JPSが確か380円位もしていたので、セブンスターを愛用していましたが、アイルトン・セナがロータス入りした頃には、普通のタバコ屋さんでもよく見かけるようになり、セブンスターが220円、JPS250円となかなかの大衆料金におりてきてくれまして、それから、本格的なおつきあいが始まりました。しかも、大衆料金化はますます進んで、220円と、セブンスター等の国産タバコと同じになり、国産タバコの値上がりによって、セブンスターの方が高くなってしまいました。こうなると人は勝手なもので、高級感が薄れたようで、複雑な気持ちに…とはいえ安いにこしたことはないという庶民心が勝っていたのは言うまでもありません。
しかし、肝心のロータスの方は、やっとF-1のテレビ放映が始まると喜んだのもつかの間、ロータスは黄色くなってしまったのでした。このままJPSを続けるか、キャメルに鞍替えするか、、ロータスを応援している訳で、タバコを応援している訳ではない、と言う葛藤の後、惰性でJPSユーザーを続けることとなっております。そんな88年、ノートンがレースに復活、しかもロ−タリーエンジンで、というニュースが、イギリス国内で89年のチャンピオンに、91年にはGP500に出場しJPSカラーはかっこいいな〜と感激しておりました。よく見ると、ロゴがなんか細い、はじめは光の加減かと思ったが、明らかに違う。タバコのパッケージには、MADE
IN USAの文字が出現、あれ〜JPSってイギリスじゃなかったの？
どうやらタバコ業界も再編、統合が進んでいるようで、日本で売られているのはブリティッシュ アメリカンタバコのもので、細いロゴはイギリスインペリアルタバコが作っているものらしい。インペリアルというと77年の日本グランプリでグンナー・ニールソンが乗ったスペシャルカラーのアレだ。
その後ノートンはまたまた経営がうまく行かなかったらしくて、フェードアウトしてしまったけど、MOTO-GPに、JPSカラーで復活しないかな…ムリ？
メンソールカラーでもいいよ。
